What do magnets do?

Placing certain materials, such as iron or steel, in a strong magnetic field can make them magnetic. Permanent magnets and temporary magnets can be manufactured in this way.


The atoms that form magnetizing materials such as iron, steel, nickel, and cobalt are arranged into small units called domains. Each domain, although small in size, contains trillions of billions of atoms, and each domain is like a small magnet. If a magnetic material is placed in a strong magnetic field, the individual domains that are usually directed in all directions will swing in the direction of the magnetized field. When most of the magnetic domains are aligned in a magnetic field, the material becomes a magnet.


Magnets do the following:


Appeals to certain materials – such as iron, nickel, cobalt, certain steels and other alloys;


exerting attraction or repulsion on other magnets (heteropolar attraction, heteropolar repulsion);


Effects on electrical conductors when magnets and conductors move relative to each other;


Affects the path traveled by charged particles in free space.


Based on these effects, magnets convert energy from one form to another without losing their own energy forever. Magnet function


Examples are:


Mechanical to mechanical – such as attraction and repulsion.


Mechanical to electrical - such as generators and microphones.


Electrical to mechanical - e.g. motors, speakers, charged particle deflection.


Mechanical deheating – e.g. eddy current and hysteresis torque devices.


Special effects – such as magnetoresistive, Hall-effect devices and magnetic resonance.
